A deadly attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego occurring on May 18, 2026, has left three people dead and devastated communities across the United States. Authorities are currently investigating the shooting as a hate crime after evidence suggested the attackers were motivated by anti-Muslim ideology.According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), two teenage gunmen entered the mosque during evening activities and opened fire. Three members of the mosque community were killed. Security guard Amin Abdullah, mosque elder Mansour Kaziha and community member Nadir Awad. Investigators said the attackers later died due to apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds a few blocks from the scene. Witnesses and law enforcement officials have praised Abdullah for his heroic actions during the attack. The SDPD have confirmed that he confronted the shooters and helped trigger the mosque’s lockdown procedures, actions that likely saved many lives, including children attending programs at the center. Community leaders have since described all three victims as heroes who acted courageously in a moment of crisis. In the days following the shooting, vigils and memorial services were held throughout San Diego as thousands gathered to mourn the victims and show solidarity with the city’s Muslim community. Religious leaders from churches, synagogues, and other faith organizations joined local residents in condemning the violence and calling for stronger action against hate crimes nationwide. The tragedy has also sparked national discussions surrounding domestic extremism and gun violence. At Alhambra High School, one student who preferred to not be identified due to privacy reasons has expressed fear over his Muslim faith. “I feel like practicing my faith poses a risk to my very own life”. State officials and community organizers have since called for increased security at places of worship and increased efforts to combat religious discrimination as well as online radicalization. Many residents say the attack serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of hate-inspired violence and the importance of unity during times of fear.
