At Alhambra High School, Academic Decathlon is more than a competition team. It is an academic community where students from different grade point average divisions work together to prepare for one of the nation’s most challenging academic competitions. Led by adviser Mr. Sanchez, the program brings together students from varying academic backgrounds to study subjects including math, science, economics, literature, art and English. The club emphasizes peer mentorship, with experienced members helping newer students strengthen their understanding of competition material while building teamwork and study skills.
Recently, the Alhambra High School Academic Decathlon team earned first place in Los Angeles County, extending its three-year streak as county champions. The victory secured the team’s advancement to the next level of competition, where members will represent Alhambra High School on the national stage. Preparing for Academic Decathlon requires months of dedication. Students spend hours after school and on weekends studying extensive materials, practicing speeches and interviews and refining presentation skills. The competition challenges participants across multiple academic areas while also testing communication, critical thinking and collaboration. Beyond competition results, Academic Decathlon helps students build skills that extend beyond high school. Members develop discipline, time management and confidence while learning to balance rigorous academic preparation with other responsibilities. The program demonstrates how teamwork, determination and consistent effort can lead to long-term success.
The team’s county championship continues a tradition of academic excellence at Alhambra High School and highlights the impact of programs that encourage students to challenge themselves while supporting one another. Through dedication and collaboration, AHS students continue proving they can compete successfully at the highest academic levels.
