The Alhambra High School varsity girls softball team wrapped up its 2026 season with a competitive CIF Southern Section playoff run and a strong overall record of 16-8. The Moors battled Heritage High School on May 16 in CIF playoff action but fell just short in an 8-7 loss, ending the team’s four-game winning streak and bringing the season to a close. Despite the defeat, Alhambra delivered strong individual performances. Senior Amari Antunez went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Alyssa Salazar also contributed offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run. Alhambra entered the final playoff matchup with momentum after earning a 9-6 victory over Silverado High School on May 14 during the 2026 CIF Southern Section Softball Division VI playoffs. Throughout the season, the Moors recorded several dominant performances, including a 26-5 win over San Gabriel High School on May 5, a 22-5 victory against Montebello High School on April 28 and a 17-2 win over Mark Keppel High School on April 21. Earlier in the season, Alhambra also defeated Glendale High School 13-2, Marshall High School 11-2 and Sacred Heart of Jesus High School 7-6. The team faced challenges as well, including losses to Schurr High School, Rio Hondo Prep High School and South Pasadena High School, but consistently responded with strong performances throughout league and postseason play. The Moors’ season reflected determination, resilience and growth as players continued competing at a high level against league and CIF opponents. Finishing with 16 wins and advancing in postseason competition, the team demonstrated its ability to compete successfully while building momentum for future seasons.

Amy Alonso is the News Editor for the school newspaper during the 2025-26 school year. A current junior, she will help lead The Moor Weekly during the 2026-27 school year alongside Madelyn Molina. Outside of journalism, she serves as the Humorous Interpretation and Program Oral Interpretation captain for Speech & Debate and as second Vice President of Training for the Academy of Future Educators, the school’s most active tutoring club. In her free time, she enjoys writing, photography, filming, knitting, playing games and sleeping.
Thierry Portillo is a senior during the 2025-26 school year and serves as a staff writer for The Moor Weekly. As part of the newspaper team, he contributes to covering stories and helping share news and events with the school community. He has also served as a co-anchor several times for The Moor Weekly.
