With only a few weeks left till the end of their season, the varsity girls’ water polo team have pushed hard to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Preliminaries. It was the team’s most recent league victories against Bell Gardens High School with a score of 13- 5, and the game against the Mark Keppel Aztecs on Feb.11 with a score of 8-7 that ultimately guaranteed the team a spot in CIF. The team currently has a league record of 2-2. Now having extending their season for another week the girls continue to practice on overcoming their weak points.

“We have an aggressive defense, which is a strong point of our teamwork. But we do need to work on communicating more effectively because when we don’t hear each other or understand what a teammate is trying to do, that’s when things go wrong and we lose the ball,” junior captain Vanessa Gutierrez said.

Having won their game against Mark Keppel during their preseason, the girls were confident and optimistic about their chances of victory once again. It has been 20 years since both boys and girls varsity teams last qualified for prelims, and this year the AHS team is once again up for the challenge.

Knowing that they will be losing their senior goalkeeper, Macy Chung, after this year, many of the underclassman are stepping up and learning cleaner and faster techniques to keep the team just as strong next year. Hoping to end her last season with a bang, senior captain Macy Chung is excited for the teams chances to qualify to CIF finals.
