The varsity baseball team is anticipating success once again after an eight-year winning streak in the Almont League. The athletes proved their desire for another successful year after earning a 4-1 record in the preseason. On March 2, the team prevailed over Pasadena Polytechnic School in their first preseason match with a score of 12-6.
“Weʼve been practicing for nine months, but we need to reinforce [our] fundamentals,” Head Coach Steve Gewecke said.
Gewecke also believes that if the team pays attention to detail, they will be successful. Gewecke and Assistant Coach Chris Cosbey train the players with daily stretches, hitting practices, catching routines and other offensive and defensive strategies.
With many returning players, Gewecke seeks to perfect and utilize added pressure-offensive tactics to put the defense in an awkward position.
“We have been doing well in practices, fi xing small problems. Hopefully, we will be able to improve larger areas of weakness,” Captain Juan Crespo said.
The Moors have been successful in keeping their winning streak for seven consecutive years by taking first place in Almont League.
“We have a good team this year and we have to play to our [best] abilities. We should be fine if we do just that,” outfielder Cory Yip said.
Now that the team is entering the regular season, they seek to reinforce fundamentals and work on team drills.
With luck, Gewecke and Cosbey hope to make California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs and triumph in Almont League to contribute to the long-standing triumph of the varsity baseball team.
