Having placed third last year in Almont League, the varsity girlsʼ tennis team is aiming for fi rst place, as well as qualifying for the California Scholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs again.
The girls began their preseason with a 4-4 record. According to Head Coach Calvin Chow, it takes time for everything to come into place, which is why preseason games are crucial. Currently, the girls are working on how to be more consistent, as well as being more aggressive on their shots.
They have also been working on lobbing, a technique used against their opponents when they are near the net and are unable to volley back the next shot.
“The girls understand what it takes to be on the varsity team: commitment and dedication,” Chow said.
On Sept. 27, the girls played their first league game against the Mark Keppel Aztecs which resulted in a 9-9 tie, but a 77-79 point loss. Although their first match ended in a loss, the girlsʼ rebounded and won their second league game against the Schurr Spartans, with a 12-6 win.
“If the team stays focused for the rest of the season, there is a chance for the Moors to claim league championship this year,” Captain Aeriel Villanueva said.
