The varsity boys’ waterpolo team is anticipating success as they approach the Almont League season with renewed ambitions, eager returners, and aspirations of victory. This inspired group of athletes presumes that their foreshadowed success is a work in progress; they are hoping to direct the course of the season to their favor.
The team currently has a 1-5 preseason record, losing with a score of 1-21 against San Marino on Sept. 10 at the San Marino Tournament. However, the Moors are confident that they will continue to consistently improve before the start of league.
“My goal this year is for us to improve as a team by increasing the intensity of our practices,” Head Coach Sarah Duran said.
Defense has always been a key determining factor for the outcome of games, and the Moors plan to emphasize its importance by incorporating a rigorous practice schedule that focuses on reliable strategies, speed and conditioning, all of which are critical in maintaining a solid defense.
“Proper conditioning is crucial; We are competing for seven minutes each quarter with minimal breaks in between,” varsity Captain Jeffrey Leung said.
With their plans for improvement thoroughly held in mind, a resilient work ethic will be needed to put those plans into action. The team dedicates long practice hours while balancing their school work and other activities.
“We need to push past our weaknesses and remain focused on our goal. No excuses just hard work,” varsity Goalie Thomas Phan said.
Being triumphant in Almont League will not be an easy task. However, they approach the season with a revitalized mentality and a competitive spirit.
