New challenges await the JV girls’ tennis team this year as they begin their season with seventeen members, many of whom are still learning the sport. Although the team performed well during their preseason with a 3-5 record, they acknowledge that there is still room for improvement.
“We have many beginners this year, so we need to help [them] get better so that the freshmen are ready for the next two years,” JV Coach Bill Yee said.
The team has been hard at work during their five-week summer camp. They worked on fundamental skills, such as their serving, forehand, backhand and volley.
“Sometimes I will pull them aside during practice. Head Coach Calvin Chow also helps the beginners and takes time to work with them on Saturdays,” Yee said.
After the first three preseason games, Yee has noticed a gradual improvement with the newer players. During the summer, they started off not knowing how to play tennis. Currently, they are able to rally and serve consistently.
“Sometimes, we make silly mistakes, such as not being ready for [incoming] volleys. We just need to be ready,” Captain Julie Chan said.
According to Yee, the girls need to work on fundamental skills, such as hitting with more pace and serving the ball more efficiently. The girls also need to learn how to make quick decisions on court, as well as know where to hit the ball.
Besides winning games this year, Yee has another goal in mind: preparing the girls to move up to varsity. This year’s players are hardworking.
“I really enjoy this group of young ladies and their work ethics,” Yee said.
