Moors in the Hunt for Playoff Spot

The boys soccer team has hit a wall in their past six games. They are coming off a seven to one loss against longtime rival, the Schurr Spartans. Their other five games include a win against the Mark Keppel Aztecs, a draw against the San Gabriel Matadors, two losses to Bell Gardens and Pasadena, and a two nil loss to the Oilers.

Granted, this six game stretch includes games against the two best teams in the Almont League, but after this tough stretch, the Moors came out with one win and one draw, leaving them in the middle of the pack in the Almont League Standings, three games right behind the rival Spartans. The team is still confident, however, that they can still make the playoffs and the players have certainly reflected this fighter’s mentality.

“We definitely still have a shot; we may have lost a couple of games, but in the end what matters is how we finish. We’re not too far out in the standings and I’m more than confident we can bounce back,” senior Isiah Sedano said.

Although the Moors are ready to jump back in the fight, at a glance many may recognize the staggering goal differential in games they lose. In both games against teams at the top of the table, the Spartans and the Lancers the Moors gave up seven goals in each game, and only came away with one throughout both of those games. While this may not be a proper assessment of every game the Moors have played, they are precursors to upcoming games on their schedule against teams with good records. When asked about how the Moors can bounce back from losses of a large margin. The players seemed to be focused on communication. “Whether the topic is defense or offense, the game of soccer is entirely reliant on communication,” senior Andy Flores said. “Sometimes you think you have a team figured out, but… you have to be able to adjust in game and stay on your feet,” senior Andy Flores said.

The Moors look forward to a rematch against the  Matadors on Tuesday, Jan. 28, hoping to bounce back from their recent tough stretch.
