Slow Start for Moors Basketball

The boys basketball team is facing a rocky start to their season. With excitement buzzing for the upcoming season, the Moors went 6-11 in the preseason, playing tough teams along the way while losing by small margins. Following a recent loss to Schurr High School on Jan. 10, the team has started its season with a 0-2 league record.

“The season didn’t start the way we planned for it to go, but we are continuing to work hard every day at practice to compete for the league title,” senior Matt Amano said.

In their first league game, the team played the Montebello Oilers Jan. 7, only losing by four points with a score of 46-42. After an impressive comeback run, they still came up short at the end. In their following league game against the Schurr Spartans, the teams traded buckets, keeping the score close throughout the first three quarters. However, in the fourth, the Spartans went on a dominant run, closing out with 17 points to Alhambra’s 10, securing the victory with a 56-46 score. While it remains to be seen whether or not the varsity team can overcome their slump, they are not letting their losing streak affect their mindset for the rest of the season.

“As a senior, it is important for my teammates and I to set the example for the underclassmen on the team by focusing on our mission to win the league title,” Amano said. “It is my final year on varsity and it’s been fun so far. I’m grateful for the memories I’ve made over the last few years and I hope I can cap it off with a championship.”

The boys basketball team’s next game is a conference match Friday Jan.24 in Montebello against the Oilers at 7.p.m.
