The Alhambra Civic Center Library opened a center called the Discovery Center. This center offers library cardholders access to a Circuit Maker, 3D Printers, computerized Brother sewing machines ,circuit kits, computers/ laptops/iPads and a button maker. The

Discovery center is available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Reservations for each piece of equipment can be made up to one day in advance.

“What is the point of opening the center with all this cool equipment if we only get less than two hours with it?” senior Domonique Hollis said.

The library has fees for certain equipment. Use of the 3D Printer costs 50 cents for each 30 minutes and buttons cost 25 cents each to make. For the sewing machine, users are required to bring their own materials. “I consider myself a creative student and I am glad that our city is giving me this new creative outlet with technology that I would have not otherwise have been exposed to,” senior Joslyn Lieu said. The library is also looking for anyone over the age of 16 and experience with technology to volunteer at the Discovery center.

“I think it is a great volunteering opportunity for students like me who want to work with this type of technology and get to work with other people as well” senior Nadia Lugo said.

To make a reservation for a piece of equipment, call the Teen Desk at (626) 570-5008. To volunteer at the Discovery Center, fill out the volunteer application on the library’s website. The application requires all volunteers to be fingerprinted at the Alhambra Police Department.
