Lack of Sales Cut Winterball

Friday, Dec. 10, was approaching and couples had prepared for Winterball by buying new outfits, flowers and accessories.
However, this year’s Winterball, hosted annually by Girls’ League, was postponed by Assistant Principal and Director of Business and Activities Jeremy Infranca, adviser Candace Collins and club leadership. The original date and location of the dance was supposed to be on Dec. 10 at the Calamigos Equestrian Center. To make up for the ball, an alternate dance, the Spring Fling, will take place on campus in April.
The main reason for delaying the dance was a lack of ticket sales and the risk of losing $7,000—the full cost of the dance. Only 40 people had purchased tickets and altogether the club lost approximately $2,000.
“We should have reminded students ahead of time by [announcing] a rush date to buy tickets,” said Director of Girls’ League Justin Tran.
Girls’ League believes that the lack sales generated by Winterball may have been caused by the event being held too close to Homecoming. Another explanation to the low ticket sales was the extended Thanksgiving break causing students to forget about Winterball.
“I hope that next Winterball, we can bring down the prices to accommodate our loss, […] and that Girls’ League can come up with more enticing ideas to allow people to attend the dance,” said Tran.
