On Dec. 9, AHS students had the opportunity to enjoy the Winter Concert featuring performing arts groups as they showcased their talents. Dubbed “‘Tis the Season,” performers played music to celebrate the holiday season.
Tickets to see the Winter Concert were sold by performers and at the door for five dollars. The day of the performance also marked the end of band’s raffle ticket fundraiser. At the end of the concert, three winners received prizes: an Apple iPad, a $50 gift card to the restaurant 38 Degrees and two movie tickets with a $10 gift card for Regal Theater.
The students had been practicing for this concert since mid-October, under the direction of Choir director Sara Maloney and Band director Mark Trulson.
The performers included concert band, orchestra, choir, jazz band, beginning instruments and hand chimes.
A varied assortment was chosen to be performed at the concert. From pieces originating from around the world such as “Gaudeamus Hodie” to those such as “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” the concert featured diverse music.
According to Maloney, the songs chosen were based on the students’ skill level and its appropriateness of the season.
Senior drum major Sergio Gardea felt that school concerts benefit performers by allowing them to exhibit their talents as well as providing the school entertainment.
“It helps our school by advocating the good name of music in our local community,” said Gardea.
Other performers shared similar sentiments.
“It allows Alhambra’s students and parents, as well as the members of surrounding communities, to catch a glimpse of the wonderful music programs Alhambra has to offer,” said Colorguard co-captain Catherine Nguyen.
