The Alhambra varsity boys water polo team has just begun its fall season and is putting as many hours as possible in the pool as well as the weight room. To be better prepared for the coming games, the team practices every day at Granada Park from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Daily practices consist of warm-ups, shooting drills and scrimmages between the varsity and junior-varsity teams. Along with those drills are discussions on tactics and other forms of teamwork to improve team chemistry.

Practicing daily allows the new varsity team to develop their chemistry with each other and their set plays. This year’s varsity polo team consists of relatively new players, but with their time spent together they have become more coordinated and familiar with each other’s strengths and weaknesses better.

“From the previous season we have become better acquainted and work better together as a team now,” Senior Co-Captain Wilson Liang said.

As the team looks ahead to their regular season games, the new athletes have their eyes set on returning to the success that they had years ago. To achieve this goal, Head Coach Vanessa Pena intends to enhance the team’s performance through constant conditioning and repetitive drills with daily practices playing a major role in achieving success throughout the season. As the season progresses, the team hopes that with repetition they will continuously improve their skills.

“I hope we can get to a point where certain types of shooting comes natural, which can be accompanied by a kind of confidence that I find the team is lacking,” Pena said.

As long as the team keeps improving and builds their chemistry, they hope to have a successful season. The team will next play in the annual El Rancho Tournament this weekend.
