Pi Day is a day in which we celebrate a number. But not just any number! Pi, commonly used in math as the Greek letter for p, is used in the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. According to the Scientific American, this was discovered in 1706 by William Jones. Pi is special because it is an irrational number that never ends, due to the fact that 27 isn’t evenly divisible by four and its quotient does not having a repeating pattern.

Teachers specializing in math and science celebrate this day in many different ways. Some of the most common celebratory events include a potluck of different types of fruit pies, pot pies, and even pizza pies. According to Education World, one activity many students participate in on this day is trying to figure out the exact value of pi.
