On Sept. 23, a writing lab, one session out of many was offered to AHS students who needed guidance in writing their personal statements for college. During this session, Cal State Los Angeles graduates and professors read students’ college essays and offered aid.

“The Writing Lab is an invaluable resource for our students. Not only will it help enhance writing skills at all levels, but it also gives students an opportunity to get a feeling of a college environment,” English department chair Nancy Padilla said.

AHS AP Ambassadors members also attended to assist students. The workshop was held at the computer lab behind the library after school from 2 to 3 p.m.

“The [professors and student graduates] helped me improve my personal statement by assisting me to add more details and experience,” said senior David Le.

During the writing lab, students were given a piece of paper with a timeline. Dr. Land, an English professor from Cal State Los Angeles, demonstrated how to organize the timeline and include personal events, such as birthdays and ceremonies. This was meant to allow students to organize their lives in preparation of college essay-writing.
“We hope that those [who] attend the workshops gain some insight and ease their fears. The goal is always to improve writing skills and help students find their voice,” AP Ambassadors co-vice president Taylor Thomas said.
