The Alhambra Moors varsity football team kicked off the preseason with a loss to Western High Pioneers on Aug. 28. Even though the Moors picked up three fumbles, they still made many mistakes that the Pioneers took advantage of for a 26-0 win.

On Sept. 14, the Alhambra Moors faced the Rowland Raiders at Moor Field. Unfortunately, the Moors lost 34-13. The Moors did not complete a single pass but did manage to score one touchdown in the third quarter.

The team’s first win of the preseason was versus the Temple City Rams with a score of
34-21 on Sept. 11. Alhambra Moors defeated the Rams under head coach Eric Bergstrom’s instructions of a strong running offense and plays on defense. He says that the team knows how to play and work together while treating each other with respect but needs to work on the consistency of their plays as shown in the past two games. Even though there were losses, he also says that for the upcoming games, Alhambra has to look at each team individually.

“This year, we’ve done a very good job of building a very committed group of
individuals,” assistant coach Jon Sarris said. “To improve, we just need to keep doing a better job of identifying what we’re seeing ahead of us and making sure that we continue to communicate
with one another on and off the field.”

One of the varsity football team captains, Amelio Dagget, feels that the team is well
prepared for future games in the season. He also says that the team should not go into games with a too strong headed mindset.

Being able to communicate with the team and coaches seems to be one of the key elements when performing plays.

“We always come out expecting to win. But we always expect to play what we consider more football; that is to come out and be physical, be committed, play with effort, and at the end of the day we’re going to have great sportsmanship,” Sarris said.
