Varsity Baseball Looks To Finish Strong In League

For the first time in a decade, the boys’ varsity baseball team will not be Almont League Champions. However, the Moors currently still own a league record of 11-4, only behind the Montebello Oilers. With their final games, the team found a way to be consistent before they move to the postseason. It is evident in their five game winning streak to end the season, with quality wins against Bell Gardens, San Gabriel and Montebello. Unfortunately, the Moors well be left thinking about what could have been had they found a way to earn a win against Montebello, Schurr or Mark Keppel. Following a recent loss, Head Coach Steve Gewecke addressed the team status.
“We need to win out,” Gewecke said in a Whittier Daily News article. “We need to hope [that Schurr loses]. Can that happen? Yeah. We need to shore up some things. You have to give Schurr credit…Some of it was that we were inconsistent.”
Despite working on situationals during practice, the team has not been able to consistently score runs during games. For example, on March 14, the Moors were able to combine for 14 runs in a win against the Mark Keppel Aztecs only to muster two runs in a loss to the same team three days later.
“We’ve improved on every asset both mentally and physically,” junior third baseman Felipe Landero said. “However, the team is still trying to improve on in-game situations offensively.”
With the league title chances gone, the team must focus in practice before entering the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, hoping for a good matchup. As the Moors head in the playoffs, they hope to repeat their run that brought them to the final a couple years ago and come out on top this time.
