Varsity Girls’ Softball Bats Their Way Through Season

With two games left in the Almont League season, the varsity girls’ softball team continues to accomplish goals. Last year, the girls placed third in the league and qualified into the second round of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) preliminary games.
The girls’ goals this year were to be undefeated, win league champions and qualify past the third round of CIF. Although they did not achieve their undefeated goal, they are preparing for the fight to win the title of Almont League Champions by practicing diligently five days a week for three hours a day.
During daily practice, the players pair up to work on their swings and pitches, short hops and both backhand and forward hand pitches. On top of that, they run, condition and occasionally have a scrimmage game against the JV team. They also practice their defense and communication skills.
The Lady Moors agree that it is necessary for the team to incorporate trust and communication into their practices. They are learning how to rely on each other by practicing countless plays and bonding with each other, both on off the field. The girls believe that every athlete on the team puts in their best effort during practices and games.
“We have improved so much and we finally work together like a family. If we keep working hard, we can win league! I’m so proud of how much effort we put into practices and games. I’m happy I can call this team my family.” sophomore Natividad Landeros said.
The softball team has now played a total of 10 league games, with a record of 6-4 and are currently ranked third in the league. The Lady Moors’ next league game is on May 14, against the San Gabriel Matadors at San Gabriel High as they look toward possibly taking a lead in rankings.
