Varsity Boys’ Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night, Heads into Postseason

The end of the school year is almost over and the varsity boys’ volleyball season is coming to
an end. It has been a competitive spring season for the boys, who have won seven out of their ten games and placed second in league. The team’s last league game was held on May 5 against Montebello High School, winning with a score of 3-0, successfully securing their qualification into the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Preliminaries.

“I feel pumped up to see this team back in the playoffs. [We] are trying to eliminate the errors
that got us during the preseason and league so that it doesn’t hurt us in CIF. If we get those things down, we can upset some teams,” junior Andy Giang said.

Having qualified to the second round of CIF last year, the farthest the team had ever advanced in AHS history, the Moors are better prepared and more aware of the upcoming competition. Along with communication, the team expresses the need to continue practicing on their defensive blocks and their offensive hits and passes. With the guidance of Head Coach Charles Tran in his last season of leading the team, the team is optimistic for their chances to qualify past the second round of CIF.

For most of the athletes on the varsity team, this season will not be their last; however, for seniors, these last couple of games were their last opportunity to wear the Moor uniform. In order to celebrate these seniors, they were given a special night of recognition at their last home league game on April 28 against Bell Gardens. Not only did friends, family and administrators attend to see the team win with a score of 3-1, but they also awarded and celebrated the team’s current seniors for their time and dedication.

“It was great to see everyone come out and support us,” senior denfense specialist Edwin Cheung said. “I’m definitely going to miss all the seniors and all the funny moments we’ve had.”
