New Club on Campus: Black Student Union

Though AHS is largely populated by Asian and Hispanic students, black students also compose a portion of the student body. Consequently, there is a club on campus that celebrates black culture and identity.

The Black Student Union (BSU) is meant to promote awareness of the African-American people.

“[I want to] have everyone experience the African-American culture. I want students to learn about [it] and how much it’s contributed to this country,” said President Andres Norwood.

In his quest to spread the knowledge, Norwood is not limiting the club to simply black students, but rather, the entire AHS population.

“We want everyone to be in it, no matter what race. I prefer it to be as diverse as possible,” he said.

Meetings require planning a week ahead and usually revolve around a topic of discussion, such as the Black Panthers. Speeches can be given regarding the topic and members discuss afterwards about what they’ve learned.

All in all, however, one of Norwood’s long-term goals is to bring the student body closer with each other.

“I want everyone to get along and become united,” said Norwood.
