JETS Team Takes First at USC Competition

The Math Engineering and Science Academy (MESA) is an organization on campus catering to students who wish to find careers in those areas.

Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) is a sub-group within MESA that attends the Test of Engineering Aptitude, Math and Sciences (TEAMS) competition sponsored by and held at USC. One team of eight seniors took home first place in regionals and second place overall at the competition on Feb. 27.

High schools from across the state sent their crack teams of up-and-coming engineers to tackle the real-life emulating problems presented at the competition.

“This year we were given topics such as techniques for producing ultra-clear water for use in computer chips. We were tested on how to make sure water projects meet the needs of society while conserving the environment,” said senior member Kyle Wong.

Though the team itself is very independent, it operates with help from MESA adviser Eric Wolf and garners much support from within its members.

“Overall, the competition gives us an opportunity to encounter real-life problems and find solutions to them the way […] engineers do,” said Wong.
