“In This Corner of the World”

By Ruby La

“In This Corner of the World” is an anime film by creator Fumiyo Kono which is available now on Netflix. Although the movie is a little over two hours long, it is well worth watching. The story takes place in Japan during the Showa period, which occurred from 1926 to 1989. It follows the main character, 18-year-old Suzu Urano as she experiences life in Japan during World War II. The movie shows the hardships and gives insight into the everyday lives of the Japanese people during this time. For example, viewers can see how the Japanese military stifled certain actions, such as sketching battleships while they are in the harbor, in fear of espionage. The movie deals with the realities of war, loss and military oppression, however, the serious tone of the film is offset by Urano and her interactions with her family. This movie is heartwarming, informative, eye-opening and tear jerking. It is a must-watch for history buffs and individuals who prefer a more serious tone.
