New League Rule Prevents Draw

Recently, the girl’s soccer team went up against Schurr High School. Within the first half of the game the Lady Moors were able to make one goal thanks to their teamwork and determination. With the two teams being well matched in skill it was hard for either team to make a goal during the second half of the game. It was only last minute when the opposing team, Schurr scored a goal. Despite this, the team made a good match for Schurr, a team which was undefeated for many years until last year. “Last year was our first time beating them in four years, and I feel like we had a good rivalry brewing,” senior Miranda Guzman said.

In previous years the varsity team has not done as well against Schurr. This time around they nearly came out with a draw, but due to a new rule that was implemented this year they are not allowed to stay tied. Instead, the Lady Moors were forced into penalty kicks. Though they may have been defeated, they did not lose without giving their greatest rival a good challenge.

As the team continues practicing, they aim to improve for all of the games to come. Recent wins against the San Gabriel Matadors (2-1) at home and an away game at Mark Keppel against the Aztecs (3-0) have bolstered their spirits; however, the Lady Moors still hope to defeat Schurr in an upcoming rematch.

“I’m looking forward to playing against Schurr again at their field,” senior Melissa Badillo said. “Schurr is always our rival to beat, they have a good team with an equally strong coaching staff, but so do we and I think that’s what makes it so exciting.”

After yesterday’s game against the Bell Gardens Lancers, the lady  Moors are preparing for a game Tuesday Jan. 28 against the San Gabriel Matadors at Moor Field. This will be their final home game of the season, make sure to come out and support your lady moors.
