Over a decade ago, the Academy of Future Educators (AFE) was founded by a group of teachers who wanted to create an organization to train students to become responsible mentors.
Since then, AFE has become known for its tutors and educators who help students both on and off campus. AFE tutors can be recognized by their light blue sweaters imprinted with their owl mascot.
The club’s existence at AHS was a result of a grant of over $100,000. The founders wanted to create an academy to train students to become leaders and to prepare students for various career choices.
Members of the academy are required to attend the AFE class every Thursday, commit to tutor four or more hours per week and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00.
The mission statement of AFE is to “prepare California students for teaching careers to meet the global needs of the third millennium.”
“Students who want to know more about teaching or want to seek a career in the education field,” said sophomore AFE tutor Tammy Cassiopeia. “We either help as a teacher assistants on campus in classrooms and Crossroads tutoring or volunteer as tutors at elementary schools and libraries.”
By being required to tutor at least four hours a week, the tutors learn from their experiences and strive to improve each time.
“We tutor students who need help in classes such as SEI and math intervention,” said junior AFE member Linda Lam.
AFE tutors also help with Crossroads, an afterschool tutoring program. It meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. in D-101 or D-103, to aid those who need assistance in a variety of subjects, including Mathematics, World History, Biology, Physics and English.
