As Almont League begins, the varsity girls’ basketball team is hoping to bring their learning experiences from both positive and negative outcomes of their preseason games. The team participated in the San Marino tournament that began on Dec. 1, defeating Sacred Heart and taking a 1-3 record. In their most recent match-up against Temple City, the team lost with a score of 30-36 but demonstrated promising effort with their close result.
Early into Almont League, the team is finishing up their final preparations. Player positions are being determined and it is crucial for everyone to be comfortable in terms of having unique roles within the team. The team is trying to establish a consistent rotation with a solid starting lineup and an enthusiastic bench to bring quick energy into the game when needed.
“A solid bench is undeniably a valuable asset to our team, and it is important that they come into the game energized and focused,” said Head Coach Chris Roberts.
During practice, the Lady Moors are still working to improve their individual skills and become more efficient in running plays. They are aiming to reach a level of comfort in which the players are able to recognize opportunities to use certain plays. They have currently been focusing on their transition offense in order to improve their fast break capabilities, as well as improving their full court defense. The team feels that defense is their main priority, so it is important that they apply their knowledge gained from practice to game situations.
“Focusing mentally and practicing on a daily basis is crucial and will not only prepare us for the season but will allow us to play efficiently as a team,” said point guard Michelle Tan.
Although the team consists of a variety of new and returning players, the team chemistry they share is improving on a daily basis. Whether they are performing drills during practice or spending time with each other outside the gym, they are gradually developing a close bond with one another.
“Overall, we are communicating well and feel more comfortable around each other. For the most part, we’re all on the same page,” said Roberts.
With hard work and a significant amount of time dedicated to practicing, the team feels that their chances of repeating last year’s dominant season are high.
