The Alhambra varsity soccer team lost Thursday’s home conference game against Montebello with a score of 2-0. Due to heavy rainfall, Alhambra was forced to forfeit the game, resulting in a loss by default.

The unfavorable weather left Moor field in unplayable conditions. Although the teams did not have a chance to play, the Moors were able to celebrate senior night and reflect on their season as a whole . Senior Night is when the underclassmen of the team honor the senior players and give them a proper farewell.

It being their last home game, senior night is seen as a way to honor the senior players and all the work they put in throughout their high school careers. Each of the senior players are recognized individually by the team for their past accomplishments. Additionally, many of the players have been on the team since freshman year and credit the team for giving them their favorite high school memories.

“Being with a team with people you’ve never met is amazing,” senior player Alan Carranza said. “Not only do you create friends but you create family. Don’t give up and strive through the ups and downs.”

Outside of the field, soccer has been a crucial tool in helping some of these players to navigate through their four years in high school. Working on team drills or even rudimentary passing strategies helped to motivate the players to be harder workers and more team oriented in general.

“This team has taught me how to work with others toward a common goal,” senior player Javier Gonzalez said. “Soccer in high school shaped my identity by making me more social, a leader and open minded about diversity.”

Other players saw soccer as a way to bond with the team and form new friendships.

“My favorite memory from this season was every game with my teammates,” senior player Shota Isoda said. “Whether we lost or won, we never gave up on each other and kept on improving.”

The team’s final season record was 6-13- 1. This record clearly reflects the struggles the team had throughout their season, but also that they came out better than ever. The leaving seniors hope that the returning players protect their legacy and do better during the next season.
