On Jan. 31, the JV Girls soccer team went up against Montebello High School in their final league match. Although they lost, the team was crowned the title of Almont League Champions. Throughout their season, the Lady Moors have shown through their amount of wins and losses that they were ready to come out on top.

Their overall season record was 10-6-2 and the team’s league record was 8-2, with their only league losses being against Bell Gardens High School and Montebello High School. The difference in the two standings is a result from the League’s decision to prevent a shared position by removing the option to tie a game.

“Each game held its own difficulties and we were proud of one another for a majority of the time,” sophomore Jimena Romano said. “We were especially proud of all the effort we put into our practices because it was definitely shown through the outcomes of our games.”

Throughout their league season, the Lady Moors achieved their largest win against Mark Keppel High School on Jan. 8 with a score of 12-0, a match that was also their second league game. The girls biggest defeat occurred on Jan. 31 against Montebello High School, their final game of the season, with a score of 0-2.The Alhambra team’s second loss was not as impactful to the team because the Lady Moors would have been crowned the Almont League champions regardless of the outcome. Nevertheless, the team aimed to finish their season off strongly and proudly.

“Before and after our last game, we were all very emotional because we all were so proud of the achievements that we accomplished this year,” senior captain Athena Roseley said. “What really made a difference was our constant work on communication on and off the field and we carried that skill into our very last game.”

According to multiple athletes, the team had a rocky beginning since a grand majority of last year’s JV team were seniors, causing this year’s team to be filled with multiple new faces. Although the players were not used to playing with one another, the team still managed to win a grand majority of their games this year. Over the span of the entire season, the team continued to work on various shooting drills and conditioning but the greatest improvement occurred in the connections of the team.

Through various trust exercises and partner drills, the team became accustomed to each other’s playing styles. As a result, it allowed the JV girls soccer team to achieve their long-time goal of becoming League Champions.
