This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine was awarded to three American scientists Jeffrey Hall and Michael Rosbash of Brandeis University and Michael Young of Rockefeller University, for researching how time is measured each day in biological systems or as the nobel prize website states, “for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm”. Hall, Rosbash and Young are now alongside previous nobel prize winners like Bob Dylan, Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa. The researchers used fruit flies to discuss over a gene that controls the circadian rhythm of a living organism’s daily life. They found that the gene from the fruit flies encoded a special protein that accumulated in cells at night, and then degraded during the day. This finding can also be used to help examine a human being’s circadian rhythm, or body clock. Humans operate on a familiar 24 hour clock that tells when it’s time to go to sleep and when it is time to wake up. The scientists found that after removing the protein from the fruit fly, they will have less sense of time and lose their circadian rhythms.
