School Attendance Goes Electronic

Recently, a change has been made to AHS’ attendance policies. The readmit slip, brought to teachers after a student is absent, is no longer being used to clear these absences.
Powerschool, a program in which students are able to check up on their grades, has added a new feature. Teachers can log in to their account and access their students’ attendance records.
“For the first couple of weeks it was a great inconvenience,” said English teacher Melissa Fu. “But now that the feature is available, it’s good.”
The readmits were removed because students had to get them before school started, which resulted in long lines at the attendance office.
“The lines were too long in the morning and the teachers didn’t like their students being late to first period,” said Attendance Clerk Manager Josie Santos.
Teachers reported that students would enter class late and disrupt class due to the long lines.
“It’s better because teachers are actually sure that a student is put back in school and they can testify that they didn’t ditch,” said junior Jessica Espindola.
