With a 1-2 record in league, Alhambra’s varsity swim squad has begun their season on a average level. However, with a great number of new swimmers, there is still time to grow and finish the season on a positive note. Having been through two months of practices and five meets, the swimmers are now back into shape and are working towards improving their strokes and kicks.
“Honestly with the performances that I have seen so far, I’m pretty happy with what our team has done. I hope that we’ll continue to improve as the season progresses and maybe we’ll be able to improve our record along the way,” senior captain Dominic Perez said.
In the sport of swimming, things can get quite repetitive. The constant repetition of strokes and kicks in an effort to get to the other side of the pool, only to flipturn and come back often becomes a bore, but practices have emphasized this repetition as the way to improve.
Each day, swimmers go through long sets of the same stroke in an effort to improve technique by the last lap down the pool. The swimmers each jump into the pool every day expecting drills on breathing, speed and stroke technique.
“I think proper stroke and better breathing are definitely some of the more important things in this sport. Having said that, I think the drills we do in practice and consistency should help us in the long run,” Head Coach Johnathan Ruiz said.
As the Moors continue their season, they hope to be able to surpass their record from the previous year and contend with top schools such as Gabrielino and Mark Keppel. Having every single member at practice every day would be the key to doing just that. After having a spring break practice and a friendly meet against El Rancho, the Moors hope to step up by the end of the season succeed into League finals.
The Moors next face the San Gabriel Matadors on Thurs., April 21.
