The Alhambra Gardening Guild was officially established this school year. On March 12, with the help of California State University, Los Angeles and in conjunction with Lowe’s and Home Depot, the gardening club has installed a garden located at the corner of B and C buildings. Volunteers such as college students and students’ families helped out by planting and buying the planter boxes, and seeds of different vegetables and plants.

“The garden serves as a reminder to make healthy choices and as an event that helps bring the community together as we work hard to keep it in good condition. We believe that the garden will show students that it is not hard to make smart choices about eating and to continue on the hobby of gardening,” club president Samantha Jones said.

After opening the garden, the gardening club has maintained the health of the garden on a daily basis by watering the plants and checking the moisture of the soil. They also check the plants for pests and remove debris that may be found next to the plants.

“Maintaining the conditions of the garden is enjoyable when you have a group of people working together with you. It has taught me that the plants rely on us; if we aren’t responsible or consistent with providing the plants with water, they will shrivel up,” co-vice president Cindy Phung said.

According to Jones, the garden is the club’s first success with fixing school grounds. Secretary Jenny Hsu encourages more students who are interested in planting a garden to join the club in order to make school an environmentally friendly place.

“If any students are interested, feel free to drop [by] for a couple meetings,” Hsu said.
