Every fall, many college presentations and different workshops are introduced to AHS students in the Career Center. In these events, students have opportunities to learn more about public, private and community colleges. Career Center adviser Vanessa Topete is in charge of reaching out to college presenters and has tried to reach out to many colleges and universities for all students. In addition, Janice Liu, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) adviser who has been working on campus for two years and 19 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), collaborates with colleges and universities to arrange field trips.

“College presentations give students a lot of options, especially to sophomores and juniors who will learn a lot more. College fairs are also good, but college presentations provide more [in-depth] information since there aren’t as many people,” Liu said.

Some colleges that held presentations this year include ones from the University of Southern California, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, Mount St. Mary’s, Massachussetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science and Cal State LA. Students are informed of the school’s requirements and have the opportunity to learn more details that they may have questions for.

Besides college presentations, many workshops have been offered to students this fall. Some include help for letters of recommendation, CSU Mentor workshops, and upcoming University of California workshops in November. This year, a writing workshop has been added for to students so seniors are able to receive additional help for their personal statements. In addition, the career center also provides the Cal State LA representative that helps guide students on their college applications every Tuesday. The representative not only assists with Cal State LA admissions but with other colleges and universities, as well.

“Considering admittance to college has been more and more difficult, attendance at college presentations allows underclassmen to set early goals to ensure admittance. Almost every student needs some form of assistance during [the] college application season, and [the] workshops are superb at supplying such help,” said senior Justin Imaa.
