The Right Angle(a): Our First Lasts

There’s nothing quite like summer in California. Except maybe spring in California. Come to think of it, winter and fall as well. While it seems our seasons never change, it’s clear that we have.

Three years ago, our biggest concern was the foreign world of high school. Now, it’s leaving the comfort of familiarity. Three years ago, the person we expected to be may not be the person we are now. I know I can attest to that. Three years ago, Alhambra High School was uncharted territory. Now it’s our home.

Even so, it’s comforting to know that some things never change. Three years ago, we were told there was a pool on the top of C Building. Long after we’re gone, there will still be whispers and rumors of a secret pool. Three years ago, we were (and perhaps still are) too scared to step on the AHS seal in the Quad for fear of not graduating. Years after us, that seal will still lie there in all its glory, carrying on a tradition of scaring newcomers.

So while our time here is fleeting, it just means we need to make the most of it. Too quickly it seems that our “lasts” outnumber our “firsts.” One last first day of school. One last second day of school, even. One last everything. One last hangout at the movies with everyone there, one last stop by the local restaurants, one last time feeling like a kid.

Despite our “lasts” outnumbering our “firsts,” AHS will always be our home. We can take the first step toward the rest of our lives, knowing that AHS will always be here to welcome us back with open arms and open hearts.
