Varsity Boys’ Baseball Hopes to Continue Almont League Dominance

Just a year ago, the Alhambra Moors baseball squad won its 10th consecutive Almont League title in fashion, finishing with a 22-4 record overall and a perfect 15-0 league record before falling in the second round of the playoffs. Led by Head Coach Steve Gewecke, the team hopes to continue their league dominance with even bigger aspirations to get farther in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs.

“I expect [the team] to have a good game every time, win or not. I think it really is on the players’ ability to sustain focus and limit mistakes,” said Gewecke. “We worked hard outside in the offseason. Whether it will pay off, we’ll see.”

According to Gewecke, the team needs to improve both mentally and physically because the team hurts itself with its own mistakes during games. They continue to work hard on the field daily throughout the season. As usual, the team’s strengths includes pitching and defense, which will keep them close in almost every game. However, unlike previous season, the year’s squad is much smaller. Due to seniors that have quit or sustained injuries, the team currently only holds 13 players on its roster.

“I think the team is very athletic this year. Pitching again will be a strength and we will be better defensively in the outfield. We don’t have depth in the past,” said Gewecke. “We are struggling offensively, despite focusing on strength in the weight room.”

After a successful start to the year, the Moors start their quest for another league title. The Moors currently own a 5-1 overall record, and a 1-0 record in league.

“Our [team] works together to do the best they can. plays a valuable part of the team,” said junior second baseman Gabriel Figueroa. “I expect our team to win another league championship.”
