Moor Veggies for Vegans

At AHS, there are many ways in which students can find others with similar interests and ways of thinking. Moor Veggies provides vegetarians and vegans with a place to interact.

“One of the reasons I started Moor Veggies with Ms. Burkhart was because of Food Fair,” said Lori Naylor, founder and adviser of Moor Veggies. “We couldn’t buy any food because there was never anything [fit for a vegetarian or vegan] to eat besides drinks and maybe some desserts.”

Moor Veggies was created as a place where vegans and vegetarians alike could come together to share ideas, whether it be recipes or advice.

“[I joined the club because] I was curious as to who else was vegetarian on campus and [to] learn about the ordeals and joys they experienced being a vegetarian,” said senior vice president Rachel Yen.

One of the main goals of the club is to raise awareness of how good a meat-free diet could be for both your health and the environment. Last year, Moor Veggies put up posters around campus with facts about how consuming less meat could possibly prevent global warming and end world hunger.

“We want to spread awareness on campus about eating less meat, but we are not an animal rights club,” said Naylor. “We try to work through events like Food Fair to get our message across.”

Students who are not vegetarian or vegans are welcome to join Moor Veggies, as long as they are willing to give up meat one day of the week.

“Even if you reduce your meat intake by a bit, you are doing a lot. We want people to realize that being vegetarian is not weird or difficult,” said Yen.
