Just last year, the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) was founded to be a club that celebrates cultural awareness. Naturally, they organized plans for this year’s National Hispanic Heritage Month. From Sept. 15 to Sept. 19, LASO held a cultural heritage week with events that allowed members to get in closer touch with their cultures.

Rather than being decked out in blue and gold like they would usually be told to, students proudly displayed their nations colors on Monday, National Colors Day. On Thursday, LASO discussed the historical figures who have made a profound change in Hispanic Heritage. The following day, LASO screened movies in Room C-228 throughout the week during lunch about famous Hispanic and Latino leaders in order to recognize their contributions to the world.

LASO plans to once again attend a Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, festival later in the year. Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Latin American holiday that honors dead ancestors with lively celebrations.People who celebrate this custom avoid somber mourning, as death is said to be a natural part of life.
