The Alhambra Cancer Awareness (ACA) Club is a new special interest club that strives to fight against cancer. The club, which was established this school year, raises awareness about cancer and what the community can do to assist the fight.

“Understanding [cancer’s] nature and how to find resources allows us to build a strong local community united in the fight against cancer,” ACA president Kristie Sham said.

In addition, ACA host events, such as the Mini Relay for Life, to inform others about cancer, celebrate the survivors and honor the ones who have fought or are still fighting.

“Hosting the Mini Relay [allowed] our club to help fundraise for the Relay For Life, an event hosted by the American Cancer Society. It is also a large informational event because ACA wants to inform and encourage young individuals to volunteer and get involved in our club’s fight against cancer,” ACA member Stephanie Huynh said.

The Mini Relay for Life was a way for ACA to prepare for the real relay and to spread awareness about cancer for a few hours. ACA provided games, entertainment, prizes and information about cancer research. The event took place at AHS’ Big Gym on April 7 at 12 p.m.

“The Mini Relay is hosted by our club here at AHS. Our goal is to inform students about the work of the American Cancer Society, share information about cancer in a fun way, and encouraging students to attend the Relay in May,” Sham said.

The Alhambra Relay for Life is an annual 24-hour event held in Alhambra Park and will be on May 31. Participants fundraise and are sponsored to walk laps; their efforts go toward cancer resources, research and awareness.

According to the Relay for Life organization, “Each […] event is special to its community, but the movement’s true power lies in the combined commitment of thousands of participants, volunteers and supporters to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer.”
