Traditionally, Junior Council is in charge of hosting the Sadie Hawkins dance, leading up to the official announcement of Prom. This year is no exception, as Junior Council presented Sadie Hawkins 2011 “Opposites Attract” on Friday, March 25 in the underground parking structure.
Aside from being open to all grade levels, Sadie Hawkins is unique in that it is the only “girls ask boys” dance.
Subsequently, it is also one of the most successful dances of the year, with an approximate total of 800 attendees and 71 tickets sold at the door.
“It’s nice because we get to sit back and relax instead of stressing over the perfect way to ask a girl for a change,” said senior Lee Man.
Junior Council had a great start: rush day ticket sales exceeded their expectations and surged the week prior to the event. In conjunction with school organizations, Junior Council hosted a carnival at the dance. There were about 25 clubs in charge of refreshments and festivities.
“We had a club outreach mission where we tried to get a lot of groups to come out and have a fundraising booth,” said Junior Council Co-President Amy He. “It gives those who [aren’t dancing] something to do too. It’s a dance for everyone.”
It was important to Junior Council that Sadie Hawkins was a success in order to set a precedent for a great Prom.
“This year, we tried to set a great tone for Prom and [give] some clues of where Prom might be,” said He.
The event was largely successful, which Junior Council attributed to the fun carnival atmosphere, attractive decorations and lighting and the large turnout.
