Have you ever been interested in fashion design or flower arrangement? Well, if you find yourself looking to further these passions, look no further than Future Home Makers of America-Home Economics Related Occupations (FHA-HERO).
This club is a part of the larger California Association FHA-HERO, which, according to www.hect.org, serves as a “pre-professional organization for secondary students enrolled in Home Economics Careers and Technology programs in grades 6-12.”
Many students in this club benefit greatly since they are being prepared for future occupations in many of California’s leading industries.
The careers range from positions in tourism to teaching and education, human resources, manufacturing and marketing.
Members from AHS took part in an FHA-HERO Competition on Feb. 26, hosted at Fountain Valley High School. During the competition, students from various schools competed in events including Culinary Arts, Scrap-booking, Fashion Design and Table Arrangement.
Each participant receives a packet for his or her respective category, which states the purpose of the event, rules, an event summary and qualification for participation. In some cases, students must be in a certain grade to compete. FHA-HERO member senior Diana Le added that since the club is made up of both active and non-active members, only people who have taken a corresponding class can compete. For example, if a member is competing in the Culinary Arts category, they must have taken a cooking class in school to qualify.
Teachers on campus also help students prepare for their events two to three days a week.
“Depending on what category you are in you meet up with the teacher who specializes in it and they can help you and give you tips,” said Le.
During the competitions students must also follow strict dress codes such as wearing official FHA-HERO red blazers with emblems, tucked in white dress shirts and any other outfits that are required for their category. Failure to adhere to these rules can result in losing points.
