Boys Basketball Prepare for Rematch

The boys basketball team has been going through an unfortunate season. Currently, they hold the second to last spot in the Almont league standings behind the Montebello Oilers, yet their overall record nearly matches that of the Bell Gardens Lancers who hold the third spot. The Lancers sit at an overall record of 10-15, and the Moors sit at a record of 10-16.

However, the Moors have a 2-7 record in league games. Recently, the Moors are coming off a loss to the Bell Gardens Lancers 67-65. With their struggle against teams in league this season, the Moors hope to salvage what is left of league games on their schedule.

“Going into league we were pretty confident this season, but haven’t played our best basketball through our last eight league games which has been pretty disappointing,” said Junior Kellen Gewecke.

Their next chance to win a league game will come against the second seeded, Mark Keppel Aztecs who sit with an overall record of 21-5. With hopes for an upset, the Moors seek retribution for the previous loss  against the Aztecs earlier this season, a game in which the Moors were outscored in every quarter; particularly in the second and third quarters in which the Moors were outscored by a total of fifteen points, leaving them in a tough spot to try and make a comeback in the fourth quarter.

When asked about their upcoming match-up the players remain hopeful for a better outcome.

“I know that if we’re playing at our best that we can definitely beat the Aztecs, we just have to stay locked in during practice and in our games,” Gewecke said. “I feel like we’re not playing up to our full potential right now, but that’s a collective effort. We need to become more self-aware of our flaws as a team and improve together.”

This time around the Moors will have home court advantage against the Aztecs in hopes that the home crowd can help push them through to a win. This will be the final game of the season for the boys basketball team.

Make sure to come out and support the boys basketball team on Feb.7 at 7.p.m. in the big gym and help finish the final game of the season for the class of 2020 players on the right note.
