The Alhambra Boys Badminton team went up against Webb High School for their first preseason game on March 1. In what was their first game of the season, the Moors went up against the Gauls in a home match. Despite the Moors having a lack of experienced players and having only a month of practice before their first game, the team performed relatively well. Throughout the matches on March 1, Alhambra was able to overtake Webb in multiple instances. However, in the end, the Gauls were able to gain the advantage, leaving the score at 8-13..

“I think the first game prepared us enough for the upcoming season,” senior player Hans Liu said. “We will need some time to adjust for the next game, but I am confident that we will win.”

Although the first game for the Moors ended in a loss, the team has high hopes for their next few games this year. The reasoning behind this is mainly due to the fact that the team has implemented new methods of practicing in order to help the new players improve. Some of these new exercises involve placing two players together and allowing them to face off against one another while they provide one another with advice for improvements.

Aside from these new methods, the Moors continue to take time out of their practices to improve their swings or form while learning different swinging techniques to ensure certain results. Despite the result of their first match, the Moors continue to work harder toward their goal.

“We won the second division championship last year so that is where we are aiming to go this year,” Liu said. “We want to get at least a Division 2 Championship, but aiming for Division 1 Championship or even the Open Division is not as bad.”

In the previous year, the Moors won enough games to achieve a title under the Almont League and they continued on to CIF matches that same year. After winning a few matches under CIF, the team went on to advance throughout the division and receive a championship.

Although the seniors from the 2018 season title graduated last year, the seniors of the 2019 season are able to use their experience to improve the skills of the newer players this year. The Alhambra Boys Badminton team’s next home game will be against Mark Keppel High School on March 13 and it will be their first season game for the year 2019.
