Super Bowl LIII Disappoints

Each year, thousands of people across the United States watch or attend the Super Bowl, the NFL’s championship game between the National and American Football Conference champions. Super Bowl LIII, hosted in Atlanta, Georgia, was played by the Los Angeles Rams (NFC) and the New England Patriots (AFC).

The New England Patriots were making their 11th Super Bowl appearance, while the Los Angeles Rams were making their first appearance since 2002. Thousands of fans were excited to watch the game, halftime show and everything that came with the Super Bowl. Although expectations from many fans were high, the game ultimately disappointed fans across America. Super Bowl LIII lacked offense from both teams and was overall boring. The score ended with the New England Patriots winning with a score of 13-3, one of the lowest scoring Super Bowl games in history. The entire game was defense-heavy and neither team could produce any offensive plays that required amazing defense, which showed throughout the game, especially from the Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams were ranked second in both yards and points in the regular NFL season, but that did not seem to show during the game. The team was unable to score a single touchdown in the game that mattered most. They had no third-down conversions in the first half and had eight consecutive possessions that ended in punts. Some may argue that many of the highlights of the game came from the kickers. Patriots’ kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed a field goal in the first quarter, failing his only job as a professional kicker. He later redeemed himself in the second quarter scoring a 42-yard field goal.

Rams’ punter Johnny Hekker made Super Bowl history with the longest punt at 65 yards. Nine out of the 16 total points made from both teams were from field goals. Another big aspect of the Super Bowl is the halftime show. Maroon 5 played along with appearances from Travis Scott and Big Boi. Similar to the game, the halftime show left many fans disappointed.

As a member of a family who loves to watch the halftime show at the Super Bowl, this year’s performance was lackluster. One highlight of the game was that this was the first super bowl to feature male as well as female cheerleaders. During the Super Bowl, many family members and friends get together to watch the game and everything that comes with it.

It brings people together, to eat food and watch commercials, even if they are not that interested in football. Games like this, however, take away from the experience viewers can have with the people around them. Overall, this year’s Super Bowl was mediocre and lacking in excitement.
