On Jan. 10, the Girls JV Soccer team went up against Schurr High School for their second league match of the season. Prior to their first official game of the season, the Lady Moors were matched up against rival schools Mark Keppel High School and San Gabriel High School in non-conference matches. In both games, Alhambra managed to overcome the defensive tactics of the two schools and win both matches. The match against Mark Keppel ended in a score of 12-0 whereas the game against San Gabriel ended in a score of 10-0.

“Before our first few matches, we were very confident in our teams performance on the field but were reluctant to play against our league rivals,” junior player Thelma Sandi said. “After our games against San Gabriel and Mark Keppel, we believed it was self-evident that we were prepared to face the rest of our opponents in the Almont League.”

For their second league game of the season, Alhambra travelled to Schurr High School, leaving Schurr with the turf advantage over Alhambra. The match began with severe ball pressure from both sides as Schurr continued to attack and shoot as well as the Lady Moors. Although there were multiple shots on targets from both teams, nobody managed to score against the other. The first half of the game ended soon after and proved to the Alhambra girls that they were able to overcome Schurr’s defense and score.

“When we first started playing the game, it felt as if we were evenly matched to Schurr High School and it was a bit difficult to move the ball around the field.”sophomore player Jimena Romero said. “The fact that we scored a goal against Schurr, one of our toughest opponents in the league, raised our confidence in this season and in the idea that we can achieve all of the goals we set for ourselves.”

The second half began quite calmly as both teams appeared to be exhausted from their performance in the first half. After a few attempts and misses, the Lady Moors managed to score a goal, which left the game at a score of 1-0. After the goal was made, Alhambra continued to dominate the ball for the remainder of the game, leaving Schurr with little opportunities to score. No progress was made on both sides and the match ended with a score of 1-0, leaving the Alhambra JV Girls at a league record of 2-0-0.

In terms of overall season record, the Lady Moors have held a 6-5-2, with the biggest defeat being a 0-6 loss to Crescenta Valley and the biggest win being a 12-0 win against Mark Keppel. The JV girls soccer team’s next game will be a home game at Moor Field on Jan. 24 against the Mark Keppel High School Aztecs at 5 p.m
