August Scholastic Aptitude Test Courts Controversy

The Scholastic Aptitude Test, otherwise known as the SAT, is a test that most students take. While the SAT has been changed multiple times, its purpose has remained relatively the same: to display the students’ mastery in English, math and writing. These tests are taken and the scores are submitted to the college of their choice, or different scholarships and programs.

The most recent SAT took place on August 25. However, some students’ scores were in danger of being cancelled. This is due to the recycling of test questions from a previous test, one that was given out last October in Asia. Students that took this test last October in Asia had prior knowledge of the problems. On top of that, the test questions were leaked on a Chinese website. Due to this, the parent of a high school student in St. Petersburg, FL. sued College Board for charging for the test and giving certain students unfair advantages . “I felt a bit shocked that College Board actually used an old version of the SAT” Senior Jacky Nhiayi said. “I lost trust in College Board for that .” College Board claims in a statement that they are trying to solve the problem.

In the same statement, College Board claimed that they will take actions, such as cancelling scores or even prohibiting some students from taking assessments again. While most of the August SAT results were released on Sept. 7, this incident raised many questions. These questions include how they should prevent the recycling of the problems and how they are going to find out those who have been exposed to the test beforehand.
