A Fight Against Dog Mills

BINTA DIALLO STAFF WRITTER

Walking into the pet store to see cute dogs can be great at first, until one actually realizes where most of these adorable pets are bred. In reality, a majority of puppies are bred at puppy mill facilities, where they are unfairly forced to breed under harsh conditions. These factories treat female dogs like products and house them in crowded places that are unsanitary, which is detrimental to the puppies being born. Instead of unfairly forcing dogs to breed, puppy mills should be eliminated altogether and all dogs should be bred at home, under safe conditions.
Not only do puppy mills harm the dogs that are being used to breed and the puppies being bred, but are also dangerous to customers purchasing these dogs at the pet store. Due to the unsanitary conditions of these dog mills, dogs sold at the pet stores may have compromised health conditions that the owners are unaware of.
In addition, when female dogs can no longer breed or their breed is no longer popular or in style, they are either killed by being shot, starved or abandoned. Dogs in these breeding facilities are also much more prone to injury. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, these dogs are injured further because of the wires in the cages they are locked up in.
To ensure that dogs are bred safely under fair conditions, it is crucial that dogs are bred at home. While dog mills pride themselves on creating mixed breeds, they are doing much more harm than good. In their facilities, dogs can be unfairly injured and killed, which is definitely no way to treat a man’s best friend.
