Girls Varsity Tennis Double up Effort in Preseason

The girls tennis team has been training hard the entire season and were finally able to apply their new skills at their first preseason game. What would have been their first game on Sept. 1 against South Pasadena, was cancelled and rescheduled due to the extreme heat. Along with this game, two other games against Burbank and Arroyo team were canceled due to scheduling conflicts. The tennis team continues to practice daily; however, and are preparing themselves to open their season record with a win. Based on their history, the girls are placing a lot of pressure on themselves in order to start the season strong.

“This year, we hope to remain league champions for the fourth year in a row,” Varsity Player Mary Hennigan said.

This being the fourth year proves a long line of hardworking and dedicated players. With every season comes a new set of goals and ways to accomplish them and the girls are only aiming higher.

“We hope to sweep through league again this year,” Varsity Captain Karenna Yang said.

Along with the league championship in their mind, the team also aims to proceed further into CIF. For the past four years, the Alhambra tennis team has been lucky enough to attend the competitions for CIF.

“Hopefully, we do well in CIF. The farthest we’ve gone are the quarter final games,”  Coach Calvin Chow said.

The heat can create more difficulties for any sport but the team is getting through it. Whether an athlete is a doubles or singles player, there will always be room for improvement.

The Lady Moors are currently selling sour punch straws to fundraise money for the team and it will be the only fundraising event the team will have throughout their entire season. The money will be for new apparel that the team plans to get to show off their team spirit and dedication. The fundraising will also go toward the players uniforms, which are charged yearly from the treasury.

The players were all very eager to play their first few games and are ready to get through this season with determination. The team has won nearly every game, except for their match against Temple City High School, and they are very eager to play against other schools The team hopes to remain on schedule.

Their next home game is on  Sept. 18 against the South Pasadena High School Tigers.
