Causes

The two known main causes of OCD are biological and psychological. According to researchers in the biological factor, the chemical serotonin in the brain seems to play a huge role in patients with OCD. It is a neurotransmitter that controls one’s mood, sleep, appetite and pain. Serotonin is also thought to regulate anxiety. Therefore, miscommunication in the brain assists in a person’s chance of developing OCD. Genetics play a major role as well. Studies show that people who have first-degree family members who are diagnosed with OCD, have a larger chance of developing it. In the psychological factor, people who have OCD develop obsessions or compulsions in their mind.  Some people believe that performing an action as mundane  as washing their hands will aid in coping with their grievances.
