In a recent and historic victory, Noya Wang was elected as the new mayor of Alhambra, making her the first Asian-American woman to hold the position. Firstly, who is she? Noya Wang is, by trade, a civil and structural engineer. She previously served on the Alhambra City Planning Commission and is currently the Public Works Director for the City of Rosemead. She ran for the Alhambra City Council, specifically for District 4 and won with 42.7% of the vote.
Through her campaign she promised to bring a fresh vision to the city, focusing on housing affordability, small business support, environmental sustainability, and youth programs— among other issues mentioned on her campaign page.
Wang’s platform also highlighted key priorities that she wished to implement, including expanding access to affordable housing for residents while preserving Alhambra’s own unique charm. She also emphasized the importance of revitalizing small businesses to boost the local economy after the Covid years hit said businesses hard. Another central pillar of her plan is environmental reform, with policies aimed at reducing the city’s carbon footprint and increasing green spaces within the area.
As someone known for her collaborative leadership style, Wang has also pledged to involve residents in city decision-making and maintain transparency throughout her term. This is something she mentioned on her campaign page where she states she wants to build trust with residents “through an open line of communication.”
She also wishes to use her experience as a city council member and advocate for community initiatives to be a better public servant for the residents of Alhambra and to build a brighter future for all.
