As the fall sports season is wrapping up, many Alhambra High School seniors are celebrating their final moments playing for their respective teams. The Mighty Moors Marching Band and fall sports like football, volleyball, golf, tennis, water polo and cheer organized events to celebrate and honor the seniors.
On Oct. 11, senior night at Moor Field featured football, cheer and band during the home game against Montebello High. Before the game 19 football seniors walked with their friends and family to mark one of their last home games of the season. During halftime, after an outstanding performance from the Moors Marching Band, seniors stayed behind and were honored in a heartfelt ceremony, celebrating their contributions with their close ones as they were announced for the time spent playing in the band.
Four year member, Julio Herrera shares his experience playing on the team, “Even though this season didn’t go the way we hoped, I have loved this sport and playing on this team for the last four seasons. Being a Moor has meant so much to me and I am glad to have met my teammates and coaches that I now consider to be my family.”
The Alhambra cheer team has been on the sidelines cheering on the Moors all season long and on Oct. 11, had its own senior moment that night for the 14 seniors. The girl’s walked out with their family and friends during halftime being cheered on by their teammates.
“The thrill of games and showing school spirit is such an honorable experience. Cheer has taught me so many things and has helped me grow as a person. I am grateful for all the friendships and memories I have gained in my years as a Alhambra Varsity Cheerleader. It has impacted me in more ways than I can imagine and I am forever grateful to be a Moor.” said four year member and Varsity team captain, Caryse Guerrero.
The Girl’s golf senior night took place on Oct. 14 in their last match against San Gabriel. The team’s seniors, Megan Lai, Camila Chacon and Yvonna Peng were recognized at Almansor Golf Course before the match began. All three names were announced on the speaker prior to tee off congratulating them on their contribution to the team all season long.
Varsity captain Megan Lai spoke on her final moments playing as well as her amazing end to the season, “Playing on the golf team for the past 4 seasons has been very memorable. I started from nothing my freshman year and enjoyed progressing my game. I’m excited to go to Individual CIFs!”
The volleyball seniors were acknowledged in a ceremony before their final game on Oct. 15. Four volleyball seniors from the class of 2025 Sophia Jones, Alina Miravete, Joanna Dong and Selena Zhen walked on the court with their loved ones as the rest of the Moors cheered them on.
Varsity captain and starting outside hitter, Sophia Jones shares her experience playing for the team, “It’s a very bittersweet feeling, throughout my 4 years I have learned and grown so much as a player and I’ll miss my coaches and my teammates. The opportunity to play on varsity all 4 years was an honor and I’m proud to be a Moor.”
The girls’ tennis season also came to a close with a large celebration for their seniors on Oct. 17. It was the final home game at the Alhambra tennis courts and 8 seniors were honored during the game.
“This season was the most rewarding and memorable in terms of learning more about self improvement and team bonding. I am grateful for the team and those who supported us.” senior Rachelle Liu said.
Finally the fall sports season came to a close with boy’s water polo having a celebration for their seniors on Oct. 22. The team had two seniors Toby Shen and Tytus Shen who both played on the team for three years.
“Water Polo has helped me in so many ways. It has helped me become capable of playing a sport, even though of the many mistakes I make in practice and the games during the seasons. It also helped me in training for a job,” senior Tytus Shen said.
